Borderlands & Duke Nukem are finally coming to theaters!

For decades filmmakers have been trying to make decent films based on popular video game franchises, but there has yet to be a single movie that would qualify as legitimately good, although the Resident Evil movies continue to make money.

Most of us recognize that video game movies could be good though, right? Many games have an interesting premise, exciting characters and are overflowing with violent action—basically all the ingredients for a successful modern film.

Well, that’s what Gearbox Software seems to think, and they’ve announced that two of their biggest franchises — Borderlands and Duke Nukem — are coming that much closer to their big-screen debuts. At E3, Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, had a livestreamed sit-down with video game journalist, Geoff Keighley, to discuss the forthcoming adaptations. On Borderlands, Pitchford said, “We’ve been developing scripts and the strategy that we’re on right now is, that it’s obviously in the Borderlands universe, but rather than retell the stories that were in the game, we’ create new stories so that the films will have their own film canon … We’ll use all the characters and scenarios, it’s similar to what Marvel is doing. You can read any particular film plot in a comic book, but there’s a lot of characters, themes, and in fact, some of the situations are represented.”

Then Pitchford revealed that a Duke Nukem movie was actually really happening! “We’re working on Duke Nukem! I can’t announce it, but it’s blown my mind, there’s been a lot of production companies have come at us. We’re putting together a deal right now with a major motion picture studio; I’ll tell you off the record if you want to know. It’s the exact right people that should be doing a Duke Nukem film and we’ll see what happens. It’s unbelievable, I think that’s very likely a thing.”

Regardless of what happens with these two films, it’ll be awhile before they hit theaters. Though it IS something to look forward to!!!

Extending your Phones Battery Life

We’ve all been there… sitting at the doctors office or commuting home from work playing your favorite game, or uploading that awesome selfie you just took and you realize your battery is dying! Smartphones have evolved into these powerful little computers that fit into our pockets, but the batteries that power these amazingly awesome devices unfortunately have not. I know to for me personally, I have to carry an extra charge bank with me whenever I leave the house. So what can you do to help you get the longest possible time from your device?

Android Battery Tips

First and foremost you will want to go to your devices settings and click on battery and you should see something like the photo above. This will give you a closer look at what is juicing your battery the most and you can take the appropriate steps in extending your batteries life.

Set your backlight to auto or even minimum

One thing that helps IMMENSELY with my devices is switching the backlight for the display to auto. The screen uses the most amount of battery consumption so this will actually save your phone a considerable amount of life. Wirecutter actually put this to the test
using the Geekbench utility’s battery – intensive routines for an hour, an iPhone 6s used 54 percent less battery—12 percent of a full charge versus 26 percent—with the screen brightness at minimum compared with maximum brightness. A Moto X Pure Edition Android phone used 30 percent less (21 percent of a full charge versus 30 percent).

I use an app by LIONMOBI called Power Battery, which definitely helps me get the best life possible from my cell phones battery. My current phone is the ZTE Zmax Pro with a battery life of 3,100mAh that sometimes lasts me up to 16 hours with moderate use depending on the apps I have running and my phones current settings.

Android Battery Tips

Trimming apps that are currently running in the background can also help. It can extend your battery’s life by up to a day depending on the applications that are running.

Dump unnecessary home screen widgets and live wallpaper

Just because they’re sitting on the home screen, seemingly inactive, doesn’t mean they’re not consuming power. This goes for widgets that poll status updates in the background, as well as ones that just sit there but look pretty and animated—not to mention animated live wallpaper.

Turn off some wireless features you’re not using

Unless you need them, turn off some wireless features on your device, as they drain your battery. This includes GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, and also Wi-Fi. Or, in a pinch, turn off ALL radios, including cellular connectivity, by selecting Airplane mode and remember your device will charge up much faster in this mode too. Turning off your devices vibration will also help conserve battery life.

Reducing push notifications

On smartphones, reduce or disable push services that notify you of new information or updates such as incoming email, video game updates, or real-time sports scores — as it needs to “ping” a remote server to send you updated info every time. In plain English, this can eat up battery (and data as well!). You probably want push mail, so you’re notified when messages arrive in your inbox, but at least disable push notifications for little-used apps. You can find this in your devices settings.

Other things to keep in mind

Something to keep in mind in the winter months is to try to keep your tech at a reasonable temperature or else it can prematurely drain your battery. If you can help it, don’t keep your gadgets exposed to extreme cold or heat – like leaving it in your car. On an unrelated note, be sure you download the latest software updates for your phone, tablet, watch or laptop, as engineers always try out new ways to improve power management.

New details in Carrie Fisher’s death

https://i1.wp.com/www.iefimerida.gr/sites/default/files/cinema_couples_6.jpg

Carrie Fisher had cocaine and several other drugs in her system at the time of her death, according to the actress’s full autopsy report which was released today.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office cites sleep apnea as one of the causes of death and also names a variety of drugs that were in her system when she suffered cardiac arrest while traveling on a plane late last year.

“Urine toxicology on admission to the hospital was positive for cocaine, methadone, ethanol and opiates,” the report reads.

It’s important to note that the report also states that although those drugs were in her system, there are “significant limitations in one’s ability to interpret the toxicology results and their contribution to cause of death” — meaning that the coroner’s office couldn’t determine whether those drugs had played a role in Fisher’s death.

The report also adds that the cocaine in her system may have been ingested a few days earlier. It’s not clear when the other drugs in her system were taken.

Now, if it’s one thing I personally know, it’s substance abuse and addiction and what drugs can do to you, and how long drugs stay in your body. Cocaine has a very short half life. Unless you’re doing cocaine all day long, everyday, then yes, it could take anywhere from 5-7 days to get out of your system… but again you would have to be doing a lot of it. If you are using it scarcely, it could take just a couple of hours to completely leave your system. So something isn’t adding up….

Fisher, a “Star Wars” icon, died from “sleep apnea and other undetermined factors” and a history of heart disease, the report states. But the manner of her death remains listed as undetermined, according to the report.

She became unresponsive after suffering a cardiac arrest on Dec. 23 while on a flight from London to Los Angeles. She died four days later, at the age of 60.

Just a few rants & such…

It’s been nearly 2 years since I’ve updated this site. (Sheesh!) Between work, veterinary school, kids, and fostering 2 litter of kittens I barely have time for myself, let alone the projects I’ve been working on including this website. Since I got a new gaming PC and recently fixed up my laptop I can finally start working on Geek and Nerd again! So just be patient I’m trying to put this new layout together and I have 6 drafts I’m working on too. (Yay! Content!)

I’ve been getting quite a few emails from readers asking when I was going to start updating the site and how much they like it. I’m working on doing reviews on every single video game I personally own and have played and beaten. Also I may start a YT channel with Mama Cupcake doing walkthroughs to old school RPG games like Final Fantasy, Earthbound, The Legend of Zelda, Drakken, Breath of Fire, Chrono Cross, etc. I mean after all it WAS my Mama who had gotten me into gaming when I was in diapers. She told me it’s how I learned to read and write full sentences by the age of 2. Plus my teenage son wants to start a YT channel of his own for video games and such. So I have a lot of little side projects I’m trying to get started on!

But seriously guys…. thanks for all of the emails and all the love I have received from you. Honestly it motivates me to continue doing this.

❤ Always,
Cupcake

Become a modder with Minecraft’s new add-on

image

Minecraft has a storied modding scene, but you’ve primarily had to play on PC to enjoy those up to this point. With its new add-ons, Mojang is bringing that magic to players on smartphones.

The Minecraft developer announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expotradeshow last week that the new add-ons feature is coming to Pocket Edition and Windows 10 Edition this fall and will enable players to remix everything in the game. Microsoft and Mojang demonstrated how this worked for GamesBeat at E3.

This is how you’d get an alien: The process is as simple as drawing up new character skins in Paint for Windows and editing some text files to give zombies pointy ears, projectile weapons, and other slight changes to their artificial intelligence. Microsoft wants to hand this power over to everyone playing Minecraft.

The files, which are in the JavaScript Object Notation (.JSON) format that uses plain-language values that humans can easily parse and edit, contain the behaviors for each character in the game as well as things like thetir size and speed. Mojang is exposing all of this data, and that means you can now take one behavior from something like a zombie and put it into a rabbit. In one demonstration, Microsoft showed us how players can take a chicken and make it explode by adding that specific character trait from the creeper mob. After copying and pasting that behavior (which you’ll have no trouble finding in a .JSON editor) from the creeper to the chicken, you’ll basically have a self-frying bowl of KFC walking around your Minecraft world.

In another example, Microsoft took the ghost-like Ghast mob and turned it into a UFO to help flesh out a series of mods it was making for an alien-invasion scenario. This is a bit more complicated than making a chicken explode, but the development team is adamant that it expects kids to pick up these skills quickly now that they have unfettered access to Minecraft’s files.

“It’s really not that difficult,” Minecraft senior producer James Webster told GamesBeat and a small room of other reporters. “It’s just a matter of creating the geometries, which is just a bunch of points in space. And then adding the textures to that. It’s really simple to make these massive changes. Add-ons, we hope, are going to encourage people to be super creative. It’s a simple thing to change things, but then they can take things a step further by remixing all of these elements to come up with brand new ideas.”

Add-ons can change the look and behavior of anything in Minecraft. And the key here is that you don’t need to go and download a bunch of extra software or tools to start making your own content. Instead, all you need is a text editor on a PC or your smartphone to edit Minecraft’s .JSON files. If you want a bit more guidance, a .JSON editor can help. With that kind of tool, you can go into the .JSON for the creeper and find where it mentions its speed and change the number in the brackets as low or as high as you want. It’s that simple.

At E3, Microsoft demonstrated its alien invasion in action:

Microsoft is focusing on making this super-easy for anyone, and it also wants people to feel confident about making changes to their games without the fear that they’ll break something.

“This is safe because you’re just editing text files,” said Webster. “Literally, all you have to do is delete your new files, and the game will default back to its original state.”

Webster also wants to let people know that Mojang and Microsoft have thought about this effort in an all-encompassing long-term way.

“It’s going to be cross-platform on Windows 10 Edition and Pocket Edition,” he said. “You can share your add-ons. You can create a Realm and bring in your add-ons so that everyone who jumps on your server will see the same modifications as the host.”

Microsoft is also promising that these add-ons will not go out-of-date. On PC, a lot of people run old versions of the game because certain mods wouldn’t work. Add-ons is built in a way to address that problem. Anything you build for the game using the add-on method should continue to work in Minecraft forever and — eventually — on all versions.

“For right now, we’re focusing on the Win10 and Pocket Edition,” said Webster. “Our long-term goal is to have this kind of customizability across all of our platforms.”

Finally, Microsoft is on an interesting path with Minecraft, where it could turn its massive player base into a connected economy of content creators. If you build the exact UFO I want, you can share it with me, but not sell it to me. When I asked the company about something like a player-created-content marketplace, it didn’t say no to the idea. But it also made it clear that if it were to pursue something like that, it wouldn’t happen for quite some time and the company is in no hurry to replace the many Minecraft skin servers that already exist.

“One step at a time,” Minecraft producer Saxs Persson told GamesBeat. “First, we open it up. Next, get it so everyone is playing the same version of the game. That’s not currently how it works. Then, in terms of sharing, we’ve already seen — with skins, for example — there are fantastic skin servers that we could never replicate. They have the editor, the sharer, the rating — we’d much rather, in the beginning, have the community figure out how they want to share rather than us dictate it.”

When pressed about whether Microsoft has any plans for a Minecraft marketplace at some point in the future, Persson again would only say that they don’t have anything planned today.

Michael E Michael

Aaron Meyers recently made a game called Michael E Michael and it features the late Michael Jackson battling against himself in an isometric, eight-direction fighting game. Siliconera picked up the news after the game recently went live over on the indie game distribution service itch.io. The game was designed as part of a challenge to not only include doppelgangers in the game, but also tread dangerously close to infringement territory.

The rules of the challenge were quite simple, reading…

The game must tread dangerously into the intellectual property of an existing game or game franchise, but be cleverly altered and culturally mangled enough to not be worth the effort to sue.

In this case the game Michael E Michael is pretty damn close to the official Michael Jackson game for the Sega Genesis called Michael Jackson’s “Moonwalker”. Like a lot of games back then it sucked pretty badly, but the music was great!

In this case the game is very similar to old SNK classics like King of Monsters, where both players will battle it out using eight directions and a handful of moves to beat their opponent into a pulp. You can see it in action with a video from YouTuber Alpha Beta Gamer.

It’s a strange but functional game, as players will be able to utilize Michael’s signature kick to knock down the other Michael, or throw a punch, or charge up and shoot out various specials, including unleashing an army of miniature Michael Jacksons against their opponent.

The game really does walk straight up to the line of copyright infringement, spits over the line but doesn’t bother to take that final step across. Since the game is called Michael E Michael and doesn’t actually mention “Jackson” next to the name it’s technically not Michael Jackson. And the fact that it’s a fighting game and not a music game removes any semblance to the character pulling off dance moves as opposed to just fighting and defending himself. The only thing that really could be construed as copyright territory is the 16-bit remix of “Smooth Criminal”. Then again, it could be construed as a cover and not actual copyright infringement.

Either way, the project really does come close to that barrier without actually breaching it.

Meyers should actually consider making a full fledged fighting game out this. The groundwork is already there and it just needs a few more cast of characters… maybe a 1980s Bobby Brown, an early 1990s M.C. Hammer and Paula Abdul… heck he could throw in The New Kids on The Block, Prince, Milli Vanilli, Salt ‘n Pepper, Vanilla Ice or Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch to round out the roster while he’s at it.

If you’re keen on playing Michael E Michael feel free to grab a digital copy from itch.io.

Cortana is Coming to Xbox One

Interacting with your Xbox One will be changing in the coming year, starting with the introduction of the new “Xbox One Experience” and continuing sometime in 2016 with the inclusion of your own virtual assistant, Cortana!

Not only are more folks receiving invites to check out the beta for the new Xbox One firmware, but Microsoft is gearing up to introduce the Xbox Beta App for Windows 10, too. As for the highly anticipated Cortana implementation, though, the latest announcement has it pegged as arriving sometime next year.

Cortana (named for the AI in the Halo series), is the virtual assistant that comes with Windows 10.  She’ll remind you to pick up things from the grocery store or warn you of traffic delays if you’ve got her downloaded on your phone, or just help you interact with and stay connected with friends on your Xbox One. Want to play Fallout but fear you might forget about that Raid you’ve got scheduled in Destiny in an hour? Get to enjoying yourself and Cortana will remind you in plenty of time. As for that new Xbox One Experience, Cortana will help you navigate, the Major Nelson blog claims it’s going to be worth the wait.

“As we’ve been doing for almost two years, we’re sharing early builds with our fans, so that they can try out and provide input on new features. We welcomed a limited group of preview members into an early peek at the reimagined Xbox One a few weeks ago. This weekend, we’ll be inviting in more.” – Major Nelson Blog

As for that Xbox Beta app for Windows 10, a bunch of new functionality got plugged in over the weekend, too. Party text chat joins the already implemented voice chat to give players yet anther way to communicate when they’re away from their console. You can also read and reply to messages directly from notifications now, and receive activity alerts. Also, now you have access to a menu that shows off your latest sharable content including Achievements and recorded clips, making it easier than ever to send them out to social media.

I am ridiculously excited for this. I have Cortana on my laptop and she’s fuckin’ awesome! This is a great move coming from Microsoft and Xbox. I honestly thought the Xbox One was great as it is, but it’s just going to get a whole lot better come next year!
